Pleasanton

from Augusta by Suicide Swans

/
  • Record/Vinyl + Digital Album

In 2016 the band once again escaped to their studio, By The Living Grace where they recorded and mixed their new album. In 2017 the band finally releases their second album ‘Augusta’ that pushes further their alt-country sound into new musical territory for the band incorporating pop, woodsy mid-tempo rock mixed with washes of violin, Wurlitzer/Rhodes flourishes, 4 part harmonies and reverb-laden vocals. The album represents the band expanding their alt-country roots incorporating pop and indie rock with the album fluctuating between acoustic laments: Wall and Come & See, forlorn mid tempo country/rock laments Pleasanton, Easy Heart and Canyons, country-indie rockers such as first single Horses, Broken Lines, and expansive sonic jams Nurse, Let Me Be and Yearling featuring the bands new found interest in mixing country and indie rock inside Americana.

about

This song is titled after the city south east of San Francisco, California – ‘Pleasanton’ where I grew up. Essentially the song is about the idea of being separated from someone you love and the feeling of dislocation that comes from being away from them when they are going through something you have no control over. In this case it was my American mother who lived in Pleasanton and was dying of stomach cancer and the terminal feelings that ensured as I was living in Australia and she was there. As well as this the song was about trying to also describe what my American father and brothers were also going through while caring for my mother. However all these feelings also entail universal themes of feeling helpless and trying to find control within something uncontrollable.

lyrics

Fell in love with your methadone eyes
Upon the ground where we lied
Smothered by the things we denied
Count all the things that broke as hard as we tried

Took you away so ugly so free
And don’t you cry you’re still beautiful to me
Cauterized all your aching bones
Suffocated you in your home

And you thought, you’d always win
Don’t know where to start, or where to begin
And I’m a long way away, from you again
Out there, in Pleasanton

Escape from the tears flooding Boardwalk street
Don’t you cry, you’re still beautiful to me
The older you get the more you have to see
What’s better for you isn’t always what’s better for me

Why would you keep your number, when I knew you would
And all the time and the changing, like I felt it could
And in your house that you were suffering, like I knew you would
Don’t forget I will miss you, I will miss you where you stood
